"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Identity Crisis

For a believer to “cover up” who he/she is so that he/she can fit into the secular world, is for him/her to denounce Christ and his/her faith in Him; because true light cannot be hidden even if it tried.

Identity Crisis. This is the root cause of some of the world’s biggest problems today. People are confused about who they are and how they fit in. Unfortunately, some of them go through insane lengths to find themselves, many harming self and others in the process.

Fortunately, “identity” is where the believer in Christ should stand out. Scripture is filled with revelations about who we are in Christ, who we are in this world and the roles that we play in the world. We are to impact our world for Christ.

One mistake people make, though, is that for us to do this, we have to “blend” into the world, cover up our identity in Christ, so that we can be accepted by the world. But from Matthew 5:14-16, we can see that it is not possible to do that.

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” – Matthew 5:14-16

For a believer to “cover up” who he/she is so that he/she can fit into the secular world, is for him/her to denounce Christ and his/her faith in Him; because true light cannot be hidden even if it tried.

When Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:20-22 that, “To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law… to the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some,” he wasn’t saying that he pulled off his identity in Christ to be able to mix with them and preach to them. No! he was saying he didn’t judge them; he didn’t need to live apart from them; he didn’t put himself on a pedestal that was higher than them. Rather, he lived with them, ate with them, spoke with them like he would another believer. I am very certain that they all knew that He was an Apostle of Christ. He didn’t need to hide that.

God is calling upon all believers at this time, more than ever, to be bold to shine forth for Him. Let people see and know that it’s okay to stand for something/Someone. Let those around who receive our light see and know that they can have an identity in Christ, that they can walk in that identity, can be confident in that identity, be bold about it, etc. and still penetrate the world.

So, let your light shine!

Have a blessed week.
