Living for God in today’s world can be incredibly challenging. With so much evil around us, standing firm in your faith can often feel lonely and isolating. If you’re struggling to obey God, feeling like you stand out as “odd” and you are tempted to compromise, let me encourage you: Remember Noah! (Genesis 6–7).

Noah obeyed God during a time when sin and wickedness were rampant. He trusted God even when asked to fulfill what seemed like a completely “ridiculous” request.

Genesis 6:11-14 says:
"Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, 'I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.'”

To understand the weight of Noah’s obedience, you need to realize the context. At the time, the world was united in one area. There was no seaside travel, no ships, and no reason for anyone to build boats. Even more significantly, there had never been rain. Before the flood, rain didn’t exist. The concept of water falling from the sky was unimaginable.

In such a context, building a massive boat on dry land seemed absurd. The people around Noah must have thought he was out of his mind. Even Noah himself likely didn’t fully understand God’s command. But despite how unreasonable it all seemed, Noah obeyed.

When God instructed Noah to build the ark, he was around 500 years old (Genesis 5:32). The flood did not come until he was 600 (Genesis 7:11). For 100 years, Noah worked faithfully on this enormous and incomprehensible task. Can you imagine the ridicule he faced? Yet, Noah never gave up. He didn’t say, “This is too much—I’m done with God and His demands.” Instead, he stayed the course, trusting that God was with him every step of the way.

If you’re struggling to remain faithful to God in today’s world, remember Noah. God saw him through 100 years of building an ark in a world so wicked and evil that God decided to destroy it. Surely, He can see you through your struggles.

Our world is not as terrible as Noah’s was. Noah had no one else to stand with him in faith—no church services, no fellow believers at work, no chance encounters with others who loved God. It was just Noah and his family.

But you are not alone. You likely have people in your life who love and serve God, too. Stand firm in your faith. Don’t let the enemy win. Keep holding on to God’s promises.

In the end, God wins—and so do we. How can we be sure? Take a look at the last two chapters of the Bible. Victory is ours!
