"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

See That the LORD is Good

We all receive God’s blessings but sometimes fail to see them for what they are. Instead, we remain focused on what we lack, always asking for more while overlooking what we have already received.

This past Thursday, while leading my siblings in our weekly prayers, I gained a fresh revelation of Psalm 34:8a: “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!” I had often read or sung this verse as a single thought, but for the first time, I noticed that the Psalmist speaks of two distinct actions—tasting and seeing. He invites us not only to “taste” of God’s goodness but also to “see” it. In other words, God’s goodness is something we can experience with our senses—both through tasting and through perceiving.

To “taste” God’s goodness means to personally experience it in our lives. God is good, and He continually reveals His goodness to us. He shows us His unfailing mercy, protects us, provides for our needs, and listens to our prayers. Yet, life isn’t always easy, and we all face difficulties. But if we take a moment to reflect, we will recognize that even in hard times, God’s goodness has been present.

This is where the second command—“see”—comes into play. It’s one thing to experience God’s goodness, but it’s another to recognize and acknowledge it. We all receive God’s blessings but sometimes fail to see them for what they are. Instead, we remain focused on what we lack, always asking for more while overlooking what we have already received. Some of us do not realize that the simple act of waking up in the morning is a blessing, or that being spared from an accident is God’s protection. We sometimes do not consider that we could have been the ones in the hospital or the ones facing financial ruin. God has kept us in health, provided for us, protected our loved ones, and yet, because we fail to see His goodness, we remain ungrateful.

As I prayed with my siblings, I asked God to open our eyes to truly see His goodness. When we recognize His goodness, gratitude naturally follows. Psalm 68:19 reminds us that God daily loads us with benefits. He is unfailingly good.

I pray that as we continue to taste of His goodness, we will also see it—that we may live in gratitude, not just focusing on our own needs, but looking outward to be a blessing to others. Amen.
