Food usually gets a lot of our attention, but water is equally vital to our existence as healthy human beings. In fact, water is the body’s most abundant and one of its most essential nutrients. One can live without food for weeks; but without water, our organs begin to shut down after only a few days. So while the quantity and quality of food we consume is very important for a healthy weight and healthy life, the amounts of water we consume on a daily basis will also make a huge difference to us.

What Does Water Do in the Body?

Every body cell, organ, tissue and many other life-sustaining body process needs water to function.

  • It quenches thirst.

  • It regulates body temperature and causes our bodies to maintain a homeostatic state.

  • Water dissolves other nutrients and transports them around the body.

  • It moistens our tissues and organs.

  • It softens stools and make them more passable.

  • It helps in the metabolic processes that produces energy.

  • It supports weight loss.

How Does Drinking Water Help Support Weight Loss?
  • Water is a natural appetite suppressor: Drinking water makes you feel full; hence, reducing hunger and your chances to overeat or snack unnecessarily.

  • Water reduces or eliminates your overall liquid calorie intake: When you opt for water instead of calorie drinks, such as juices, you get to replenish your bodily fluids without any added calories.

  • Water supports good workout: Being properly hydrated before, during and after workouts reduces your chances of fatigue and muscle cramps, as water helps muscles, tissues and joints to move correctly.

  • Water helps you burn more calories: Studies have shown that people who drink a lot of water tend to burn more calories without making any other lifestyle changes; likely because the more water you drink the more energy your body expends.

  • Water is needed to burn fat in the body: The body cannot properly metabolize fats or carbohydrates without water. So, drinking adequate amounts of water is necessary for burning stored fats and fat from foods and drinks.

Tips to Help You Drink More Water?
  • Always have a bottle of water with you. You’ll likely drink more water when it’s easily accessible.

  • Add lemon, berries or other natural flavors to your water, if it’ll make it more appealing for you to drink.

  • When eating out, choose water as your drink of choice. It’s cost efficient too.

  • Drink water before, during and after workouts to replenish lost fluids.
